Ekadashi fasting is observed on every 11th Tithi in Hindu calendar. There are two Ekadashi fasting in a month, one during Shukla Paksha and another during Krishna Paksha. Devotees of Lord Vishnu observe Ekadashi fasting to seek His blessings.

Ekadashi fasting spans for three days. Devotees take single meal in the afternoon a day before fasting day to make sure there is no residual food in the stomach on next day. Devotees keep strict fast on Ekadashi day and break the fast on next day only after sunrise. Eating of all type of grains and cereals is prohibited during Ekadashi fasting.

Devotees can choose to observe fasting without water, with only water, with only fruits, with one time latex food according to their will and body power. However it should be decided before starting the fast.

How to Fast on Ekadashi?

On Ekadashi dates, you need to keep anhydrous fast, that means you should not drink water the whole day. Such spiritual fasts should be broken the next day preferably with a liquid such as milk. If you are unable to keep an anhydrous fast (substance without water), then you can choose to go on a fruit diet.

Forceful denial of food is pointless because of your day-to-day physical activity. Apart from avoiding grains, cereals, and meat, many devotees also avoid activities such as shaving, clipping nails or cutting hair on this pious day of Ekadashi.


What Is Allowed Ekadashi Food?

If you're keeping Ekadashi fast, here are a few things you must keep in mind:

  • You can consume only one meal in the whole day. Avoid salt in the meal.
  • Fresh fruits, dry fruits, vegetables, nuts and milk products are among the most preferred edibles consumed on this day.
  • Sabudana Khichdi made from sabudana, groundnuts and garnished or mixed with potatoes is consumed as an alternative to cereals.
  • You cannot have any form of cereals. Even dal (pulses) and honey is also avoided on the day of Dashami. Consumption of Rice is especially prohibited on this day.
  • Consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food are to be thoroughly avoided.
  • Ekadashi, complete fasting is to be observed. There are some devotees who do not even consume water. This fasting is known as Nirjala Ekadashi.
