Akshaya Tritiya in India

Akshay Tritiya is a sacred Hindu festival that is celebrated on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha, of the Vaishakh Month. Akshay Tritiya 2023 will be celebrated with great pomp in various parts of the country. It is known by different names, including Akha Teej, in different regions. The word 'Akshay' means eternal, i.e. something that never comes to an end.

It is believed that a person who performs auspicious deeds like charity work, donations, Yajna, etc. on Akshay Tritiya attains fruitful outcomes in life. Besides this, the natives must also consider buying gold ornaments on the day of Akshay Tritya 2023, as it is believed that it brings prosperity and happiness in a person’s life, and Goddess Laxmi also bestows her blessings upon such natives. Also, Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this auspicious day.


Akshaya Tritiya Muhurat

  • Akshay Tritiya is celebrated on the day when Tritiya Tithi of the bright half of Vaishakh is prevailing during the Purvahan Kaal.
  • If Tritiya is covering the Purvahan of 2 consecutive days, second day will be considered as the event. However, some people believe that it can only be celebrated on the second in one condition i.e. Tritiya Tithi must prevail for more than 3 Muhurats of that day.
  • If Akshay Trutiya occurs on Monday or Wednesday along with Rohini Nakshatra, its auspiciousness increases immensely.

Akshaya Tritiya Vrat & Pujan Vidhi

Akshaya Tritiya Puja is not that a difficult thing to do. Follow the methods given below and perform Akshaya Tritiya Puja at home:

  • The one who observes fast on this day must get ready wearing yellow clothes early in the morning.
  • Now, at home, bathe the Vishnu?s idol in Gangajal and offer Tulsi, yellow flower garland or just yellow flowers.
  • After that, light incense and Ghee wick lamp, and settle on a yellow seat.
  • Further, recite texts related to Vishnu like Vishnu Sahasranama, Vishnu Chalisa.
  • At the end, sing the Aarti of Vishnu Ji.
  • Along with this, if the worshipper can make donations or offer food to the needy people, it will give great results.

Note: If it is difficult to keep the full day fast, one may take yellow Halwa, banana, or yellow sweet rice.

As per the ancient legends, Nar-Narayan, Parashuram, and Hayagreeva had incarnated on this day. That is why some people offer Sattu of wheat or barley, soft Kakadi (a type of cucumber), and soaked Chana Daal (gram pulses) to these Gods.


History of Akshaya Tritiya

According to mythology and ancient history, this day marks a lot of important incidents

  • Lord Ganesha and Ved Vyasa strated writing the epic Mahabharata on this day.
  • This day is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
  • On this day, Goddess Annapurna was born.
  • On this day, Lord Krishna bestowed wealth and monetary gains on his poor friend Sudama who had come to his rescue for help.
  • According to the Mahabharata, on this day Lord Krishna presented the 'akshaya patra' to the pandavas while on their exile. He blessed them with this bowl that would continue to produce unlimited amount of food that would never leave them hungry.
  • On this day, the River Ganges descended from the heaven on earth.
  • It is on this day that Kubera worshipped Goddess Lakshmi and thus was assigned the job of being the treasurer of Gods.
  • In Jainism, this day is celebrated to commemorate Lord Adinatha, their first God.

Rituals during Akshaya Tritiya

  • Devotees of Vishnu worship the deity on this day by keeping a fast. Later, charity is done by distributing rice, salt, ghee, vegetables, fruits and clothes to the poor. Tulsi water is sprinkled all around as a symbol of Lord Vishnu.
  • In Eastern India, this day commences as the first ploughing day for the upcoming harvest season. Also, for businessmen, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped before starting a new audit book for the next financial year. This is known as 'halkhata'.
  • On this day, many people buy gold and gold jewellery. As gold is symbolic of good fortune and wealth, buying this is considered pious on this day.
  • People plan weddings and long journeys on this day.
  • New business ventures, construction work are started on this day.
  • Other rituals include taking a holy bath in the Ganges, offering barley into a sacred fire and making donations and offerings on this day.
  • Jains complete their year long tapasya on this day and end their worship by drinking sugarcane juice.
  • Performing spiritual activities, meditation and chanting holy mantras is considered important to ensure good fortune in the future.
  • Devotees of lord Krishna embalm the deity with sandalwood paste on this day. It is believed that on doing so, the person is bound to reach the heaven after death.

Akshaya Tritiya Legend

As per the Puranas, Yudhishthir had expressed it to Lord Krishna that he wants to know the significance of the Akshay Tritya. Hence, Krishna told him that it is a very auspicious day. On this day, those who bathe before the midday and perform Japa, Tapa, Homa, Yajna, study of scriptures, Pitru-Tarpan, donations, etc. receive tremendous auspicious results.

In ancient times, there was a poor and virtuous man, who had faith in the Gods. Being poverty-stricken, he used to stay very disturbed. Somebody suggested him about Akshya Tritiya Vrat. Hence, he performed this fast very ritualistically like waking up early in the morning, bathing in Ganga river, worshipping the Gods, and giving donations.This man became the King of Kushavati in next birth. Thanks to the effects of those Atchaya Tritiya rituals, he became quite mighty and rich.


Akshaya Tritiya Significance

  • Akhatrij is one among those days that are considered as Sadhe Teen Shubh Muhurat (3 and a half auspicious days) of the year. On this day, one may perform many auspicious things.
  • Bathing in Ganga also has special significance on this day. One who performs Ganga Snana on this day gets rid of all the negativities.
  • Also, one may perform Pitru Shradh on this day. Barley, wheat, grams, Sattu, curd-rice, things made of milk, etc. must be donated in the name of ancestors and after that, a Pandit (Hindu priest) must be offered food.
  • It is believed to be quite auspicious if you perform Shraddh of your ancestors at a religious place on this day.
  • Some people also believe that it is auspicious to buy gold on this day.
  • On this day only, Parashuram and Hayagreeva had incarnated.
  • Treta Yuga had also begun on the very same day.
  • The doors of Shri Badrinath Temple opens on this day.

  • In Jain and Hindu Panchang, there are few days in a month that come extra and there are few days that are absent in counting. But, Akshaya Tritiya is the only day which is never absent from the Hindu calendar.
  • It is believed that if you do charity on this day, you will be blessed.
  • According to Hindu electional astrology (Muhurta), there are three auspicious lunar days. The first one is starting of a New Year which is observed on the first day of the bright half of Chaitra month (March – April). Second is Vijay Dashmi which falls on the tenth day of bright half of Ashvina month (October – November). The last is the Akshaya Tritiya which falls on the third day of bright half of Vaisakha month (April – May).
  • The day of Akha Teej is one of the most important days for farmers. Early in the morning, the male of the family goes to the field to sow the seeds with a hope to get a good harvest.
  • In Jain religion, people observe year-long alternative day fasting known as Varshitap. By drinking sugarcane juice, people break their fast on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.
