Prajapatya Marriage Astrology in India

Prajapatya marriage - Prajapatya is when a girl's father gives her in marriage to the bridegroom, treating him with respect, and addresses them: 'May both of you perform together your duties'. This is where a groom and his bride could wed without their parents knowledge or sanction.

Prajapatya marriage is a type of Hindu marriage. This kind of marriage is similar to Brahma vivah, which may be the origin of Prajapatya vivah. It is the same as the Brahma marriage in all respects, except that the bride's father gives her away as a gift, not to the groom, but to the groom's father.

Prajapatya is a Sanskrit word that is best known for referring to one of the eight types of marriage outlined in the ancient Hindu texts, the Vedas. In this tradition, marriage is a sacred and lifelong commitment between the husband and wife, and it is one of the samskaras.

Prajapatya marriage was a marriage between a male and female ,who married after the groom's family approach the bride's family. Unlike the similar brahma marriage, in prajapatya marriage, the bride's father gave the bride away to the groom's father rather than the groom.

Prajapatya marriage was most common when the bride and groom were very young, and as such the bride's father handed his daughter to the groom's father for protection during the panigrahan or hand-receiving ceremony. This ceremony was very important in the Vedic tradition.

Although the wedding ceremony itself may have taken place immediately after the hand-receiving ceremony, the wedding may have not been consummated for some years, if the bride and groom were very young.

Rituals of Prajapatya Marriage

In Prajapatya marriage, the man and woman jointly perform the sacred duties. According to Swami Dayanand Saraswati, the founder of Arya Samaj, the father gives his daughter to the bridegroom, by addressing the couple with the mantras, "May both of you perform together your dharma."

Unlike the Brahma marriage, in Prajapatya marriage the bride's father goes in search of a groom for his daughter. Also in prajapatya, there is no trading and kanyadana is a part of it as in the brahma ceremony. But the bride's menarche is to be started soon and she should be ready to conceive a child soon hence a child must be begotten soon after the marriage.

In a holy yajna, learned person and parents do marriage and advice both (boy and the girl) to continue their family life religiously. In this marriage, all the married learned persons give blessings to newly married couple.
